The NIE Number for
Spain Student Visa Holders

Spain's Número de Identidad de Extranjero — your permanent foreign ID number. What it is, when you get it as a student visa holder, and everything you'll need it for during your time in Spain.

What Is the NIE Number and What Does It Look Like?

The NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) is Spain's unique national identification number for foreigners. Every non-EU national who lives, works, studies, or has significant financial or administrative dealings in Spain is assigned an NIE. Think of it like a national insurance number, tax reference number, and resident ID number combined into one.

The Format of a Spanish NIE Number

A Spanish NIE number always follows the same format: a letter prefix (X, Y, or Z), followed by 7 digits, followed by a single letter check digit. It is a permanent number — once assigned, it stays with you for life in Spain, regardless of visa changes or renewals.

  • Starts with X, Y, or Z (newer NIEs tend to start with Y or Z)
  • Followed by 7 numbers
  • Ends with a single letter (control digit)
  • It is permanent — does not change with visa renewal
  • Printed on your TIE card

When Does a Spain Student Visa Holder Get Their NIE?

This is the most common question — and the answer is simpler than most people expect.

✓ For Long-Stay Student Visa Holders (Tipo D)

If you have a Spain long-stay student visa (tipo D), your NIE is assigned automatically as part of the TIE card application process. You do not need to apply for an NIE separately. When you attend your TIE card appointment at the Oficina de Extranjería, the NIE is assigned and printed on your TIE card. It may also appear on your resguardo (receipt) at the appointment itself.

⚠ Exception: If You Need the NIE Before TIE

In some circumstances — for example, if you need to open a bank account or sign a contract before your TIE appointment — you can apply for a standalone NIE certificate (certificado de NIE) using form EX-15 at the Policía Nacional. This gives you your NIE number before the TIE card is issued. Discuss with our team if this applies to your situation.

Everything You Need Your NIE Number for in Spain

Your NIE will be requested constantly during your time in Spain. Here are the most common uses.

🏦

Opening a Bank Account

Spanish banks require your NIE or TIE card to open any bank account. Most students need a bank account quickly for accommodation deposits and daily expenses.

🏥

Healthcare Registration

Registering with a Spanish GP (médico de cabecera) or accessing public healthcare requires your NIE and empadronamiento certificate.

📑

Rental Contracts

Most Spanish landlords and letting agencies require your NIE to formally register you as the tenant on a rental contract.

💼

Working in Spain

If your student visa gives you the right to work part-time (up to 30 hours per week), employers need your NIE for payroll and social security contributions.

📱

Phone & Utility Contracts

Signing a post-pay mobile contract or registering utilities in your name in Spain typically requires your NIE number.

🔄

Visa Renewal

When renewing your Spain student visa authorisation, your NIE is the key identifier linking your previous authorisation to your renewal application.

🏛️

Tax Matters

If you earn income in Spain or need to file a Spanish tax return, your NIE is your tax identification number (equivalent to TIN in the UK or TIN/EIN in the USA).

🏠

Large Purchases

Purchasing a vehicle, significant electronics, or property in Spain requires your NIE. Notaries and registries use it for all formal transactions.

🎓

University Enrolment

Spanish universities and schools may record your NIE as part of your student record once you are resident — particularly important for official transcripts and certificates.

NIE Number Questions Answered

The NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) is Spain's permanent foreign identification number. It follows the format X-1234567-A. It is used for banking, contracts, healthcare, and all formal administrative processes in Spain. As a student visa holder, it is assigned during your TIE card process.
In most cases, no. Long-stay student visa holders (tipo D) are assigned their NIE automatically during the TIE card application. A separate NIE application is only needed if you need the number before your TIE appointment — for example to open a bank account urgently on arrival.
At your TIE card appointment at the Oficina de Extranjería. It may appear on your appointment receipt (resguardo) and will be printed on your physical TIE card when issued (typically 4–8 weeks after the appointment).
No — the NIE is a permanent identifier and does not change with visa renewal, visa type changes, or any other immigration event. It is yours for life in Spain. Your TIE card will be reissued with a new expiry date on renewal, but the NIE number printed on it remains the same.
No — the NIE is assigned in Spain as part of the TIE card process after you arrive. You cannot obtain an NIE before travelling. However, if you urgently need an NIE number shortly after arrival (for example, to open a bank account before your TIE appointment), you can apply for a standalone NIE certificate using form EX-15 at the Policía Nacional — but this is only necessary in exceptional circumstances.
Form EX-15 is the application form for a standalone NIE certificate (certificado de NIE) in Spain. It is submitted at the Policía Nacional and is used when someone needs an NIE number before their TIE card is processed — for example, to open a bank account or sign a rental contract urgently. Long-stay student visa holders generally do not need EX-15 as the NIE is automatically assigned at the TIE appointment. Speak with an immigration specialist if you think you need this route.
Having an NIE number is a prerequisite for working in Spain, but the right to work is granted by your visa status — not the NIE itself. Spain student visa holders are permitted to work up to 30 hours per week. Once you have your NIE (assigned at the TIE card stage), you can register with the Spanish social security system (Seguridad Social) and start employment. Your employer will also need your TIE card details for official payroll registration.
The total process — from course enrolment to visa in hand — typically takes 8–12 weeks. The longest individual element is obtaining the criminal record certificate, apostille, and sworn Spanish translation, which can take 4–6 weeks combined. Consulate processing after the appointment adds a further 1–8 weeks depending on location. Your NIE is then assigned after you arrive in Spain and complete the TIE card appointment.
The financial requirement for a Spain student visa is approximately €600 per month for the intended period of study. You demonstrate this through bank statements covering the last 3–6 months, showing funds sufficient to cover living costs. The statements are submitted as part of your consulate application alongside the EX-00 form. The exact threshold can vary slightly between consulates, so confirm the current requirement with your specific consulate or an immigration specialist.
It is not legally required, but many students find the post-arrival administration — particularly the TIE card process — easier with professional support. Common pitfalls include incomplete document sets, incorrect form completion, and booking appointment errors that require costly rebooking. An immigration specialist can prepare and check all your TIE documents, advise on exactly what to bring, and ensure your NIE is correctly recorded across all your Spanish registrations.
The NIE (Número de Identificación de Extranjero) is the unique tax and identification number assigned to all non-EU nationals in Spain. It appears on your visa sticker when your student visa is issued. You need it for opening a bank account, signing a rental contract, paying taxes, enrolling at university, and most official transactions.
No. Your NIE is assigned automatically when your student visa is issued — it appears on the visa sticker in your passport. You do not need to go through a separate NIE application process. What you need to do is get your TIE card, which is the physical card that carries your NIE in a convenient, usable format.
